Asbestos Spray Coating Insulation Removal

Sprayed asbestos was used for insulating purposes in the 1970's on the back side of the roofing elements usually.
This type of insulation is the most dangerous, not just because asbestos content is the highest amongst all asbestos material in the planet, but it is very easy to disturb therefore create deadly asbestos dust.
Removing asbestos spray coating requires licensed asbestos contractor due to very high risk of health hazard.

What is the best way to remove sprayed asbestos coating?

This is a serious licensed asbestos removal work where the goal is to minimise asbestos exposure during the procedure. Asbestos experts need to use highly protective asbestos mask that covers the whole face and has P3 filter that is able to filter asbesto sparticles.
Because it is a very friable and loose asbestos it needs heavy wetting on the asbestos product in order to decrease creating dust.

Once the layer saturated with the wetting agent is finally ready to be removed safely. This type of asbestos removal job takes considerably longer time because it is pretty hard to access to certain area to completely remove asbestos insulation.

What was sprayed asbestos used for?

People also called it spray-insulation due to it's excellent thermal protective qualities.

Mainly huge agricultural buildings and other industrial constructions had a thick cover of white asbestos mix on the naked ceiling on the underside of the roofing sheets.

Apart of that fire protection was a huge purpose of using asbestos sprayed coating on beams and even wooden frames of the building.
Often find asbestos as an acoustic insulation as a noise absorber in music studios. Cheap and easy to apply but deadly dangerous.

Why was asbestos sprayed coating used?

This type of thermal insulation was the most convenient way to cover such areas where not even 'Spiderman' could access to.
The sticky and fluffy texture made it easy to use a gun to throw the coating on the ceiling tiles and literally covered up anything that people wanted at that time.

Why people used this sprayed asbestos coating if it so dangerous?

sprayed asbestos insulation coating
Back then, people didn't know how dangerous this asbestos product was, so they sprayed it without even using any mask or PPE at all.

The product was contaminated everything in the premises during the application process. It went on the floor, the wall on the windows and workers inhaled a lot of asbestos fibres.

Asbestos fibres in the body create long term irritation and can cause cancer like mesothelioma or non cancerous disease like plerual thickening in the lungs lining.

What is the asbestos sprayed coating made of?

As you know already this type of product is the most hazardous to health.
The components are white asbestos (chrysotile) and Portland cement binder which mix creates
a very light and friable asbestos product.
The asbestos content is up to 85% in this mix.
Just compare to asbestos insulating board (approx 20%), asbestos cement roof (15%) they have much lower number
and asbestos bonded well in this materials therefore they considered safe in good condition.

Can I use asbestos encapsulation on spray coating?

It depends on your need really.
