What is Asbestos Roof?

Asbestos roof is often found in old garages or shed and even domestic buildings.
Asbestos roof is a type of roofing material that was used mainly between 1907-1980. The harmful asbestos fibres can be found locked in asbestos cement roof sheets, garage roof, and roof tile.

How dangerous is asbestos roof?

Asbestos roof is a bonded asbestos building material or in the other words a non- friable asbestos material that is considered safe until is disturbed. The average asbestos content in percentage is between 10-18% depends on what type of asbestos roof you are looking at.  

What types of asbestos roofing materials do exist?

  • Corrugated asbestos roof - It can be asbestos cement or fibreglass roofing. This type of asbestos roof was widely used on garages and sheds either in commercial and domestic buildings.
  • Roof Tiles and Roof Shingles - It looks like a flat tile and gives you the appearance of stone, but they are usually considered as cement roofs. Asbestos roof sheets are usually smaller than the mentioned corrugated sheet above.
  • Roofing Felt or Asphalt Roofing - Widely used on flat roof due to its excellent water resistance qualities.   

What else can contain asbestos fibres connecting to the roofing system?

Asbestos containing mastic and adhesive. These were commonly used on windows and door frames or as an adhesive to Thermoplastic floor tiles.

How do I know if my roof contain asbestos?

The best way to find out whether your roof contain asbestos fibres or not is to call a professional surveyor who takes samples from your roof and usually they can come back to you with the results in as little as 24h time.

What to do if you suspect asbestos in your roof?

Condition of your roofing:
  • GOOD Condition - When your roof is in good condition it can be safe even if it is asbestos roof.
  • BAD Condition - Get in touch with a local Asbestos Company who can offer the correct advice.

Damaged Asbestos Roofs?
  • YES - You need a professional asbestos company to offer the correct advice. And eventually you need a asbestos roof removal by a certified asbestos company by HSE.
  • NO - No need to do anything. Monitor the condition regularly.

Is it worth it to repair asbestos tiles?
  • Roof repair is not the best idea. It means your roof sheet started to deteriorate and it is just going to be worse. Asbestos roof repair is also dangerous, can cause accident and asbestos exposure.

If my asbestos cement roof needs to be removed can I do it myself?
  • Asbestos removal is a dangerous job and it can create asbestos dust which is highly carcinogenic. Asbestos inhalation can result in serious long term health conditions.
