The asbestos content is fairly high in AIB boards, often double than in asbestos cement products can be up to 45%. And because it is mixed with amosite, which has sharper and more scarring asbestos fibres it is a higher risk for health damage. Using Asbestos Insulating Board was a big trend from the mid 60's until 1980. All homes were built that time probably have AIB inside.

How does AIB look like? - It looks very similar to a plasterboard, but it comes with different thickness and sizes.

It depends where the insulation board used for. Asbestosis used for the sole purpose of Insulating heat and cold. It was the best for fireproofing and electrical insulation too. Apart of that it is weather proof, chemical resistance, corrosive resistance as well.

AIB - Is it dangerous?

From the various AIB elements we can say that asbestos insulating board is very dangerous. Just think about it how many time this board touched and moved during refurbishment.

Every disturbance makes the board release deadly asbestos fibre in the atmosphere. But the bigger asbestos exposure occurs when the asbestos insulation board is sawn or drilled in with a power tool.

Fibre release can happen also when damaged ceiling tiles (AIB) is reachable and people are touching due to maintenance it without knowing the devastating consequences.

This type of loose asbestos coating mainly used in industrial buildings, especially under roofs on agricultural and factory buildings. The reason behind of using this type of thermal insulation because of a lack of accessibility on the back side of the roofs and the speed of the work. This type of insulation has over 80% white asbestos in it and it is very easy to disturb. Even the wind is enough for fibre release from the insulation. Extremely dangerous.
